Pre-admission notice

How Can Candidates of the Chinese Government Scholarship-Bilateral Program Obtain a Pre-admission Letter?

These instructions only apply to candidates of the Chinese Government Scholarship- Bilateral Program, who are required to submit a pre-admission letter to the Chinese Embassy or dispatching authorities in their home country to complete their applications.

1. Application time: around February 1- May 1 

2. Application procedure:

(1) Online application: 

Applicants should first apply online at http://application.xmu.edu.cn/ and upload the application documents as per instructions.

(2)Sending email: Applicants should email ①Application Form for International Students, which is generated automatically after successful online application and ②Award Letter for Chinese Government Scholarship Candidate to admissions@xmu.edu.cn, indicating Application for Pre-admission Letter in the subject line. 

Notes:

①Online application is mandatory. Applications with no online signing-up will not be considered.

The Admissions Office of Xiamen University (XMU) will not process incomplete applications or applications for other scholarship programs. 

3. Application documents required:

Applicants must submit the following application documents on the application system. There is no need to mail the hard-copy documents after successful online application. 

(1) Degree programs:

① Award Letter for Chinese Government Scholarship Candidate, issued by the Chinese Embassy or dispatching authorities in their home country. The letter can be submitted through the section of Supplementary Material on the application system.

② Highest degree certificate and academic transcripts (notarized copy in English or Chinese).

★Application for undergraduate programs:High school diploma and academic transcripts relating to high school study.

★Application for master’s programs: Bachelor's degree certificate and academic transcripts relating to bachelor's study.

★Application for doctoral programs: Master's and bachelor's degree certificates and academic transcripts relating to master's and bachelor's study.

★Applicants who are currently studying at high school or university should provide a study certificate and their highest degree certificate. If admitted, a notarized copy of their formal degree certificate should be submitted to the XMU Admissions Office before the specified registration date; failure to do so will result in disqualification of enrollment.

③ Study or research plan (minimum 1,000 words) in Chinese or English.

④ Two letters of recommendation signed by professors or associate professors,  in Chinese or English. In the case of high school students, they are expected to submit one letter of recommendation from their high school.

⑤ A photocopy of Chinese (HSK) or English Proficiency Certificate or medium-of-instruction certificate. Please refer to the fourth part of these instructions for detailed information about language requirements.

⑥ A photocopy of valid personal passport with a minimum of one year before its expiration. 

⑦ A photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form (click to download), completed in Chinese or English. (The original is to be retained by the applicant.)

If applicants have published papers, their abstracts should be submitted in online application.

(2) Chinese Language Program:

Applicants should choose their application category as General Scholar and academic program as Chinese Language.

①Award Letter for Chinese Government Scholarship Candidate, issued by the Chinese Embassy or dispatching authorities in their home country. The letter can be submitted through the section of Supplementary Material on the application system.

② A study certificate and academic transcripts (notarized copy in English or Chinese).

③ Study plan in Chinese or English.

④ A photocopy of HSK certificate (if available).  

⑤ A photocopy of valid personal passport with a minimum of one year before its expiration.

 A photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form (click to download), completed in Chinese or English. (The original is to be retained by the applicant.)

4. Academic Programs

(1) Programs in Chinese

Most programs are taught in Chinese at Xiamen University. For more information, please see Academic Programs at http://admissions.xmu.edu.cn.

★ Chinese proficiency requirements

Applicants for programs in the humanities, economics, management, law, arts and traditional Chinese medicine need to have a Chinese proficiency certificate of new HSK band 5 with a score of 210 or above; applicants for programs in sciences, engineering and medicine should have a certificate of new HSK band 4 with a score of 210 or above.  

Note: For those whose Chinese proficiency level has not yet met the above requirements and wish to take remedial Chinese courses before commencing studies of their majors, they are expected to have obtained the new HSK certificate of band 4 for programs in the humanities, economics, management, law, arts and traditional Chinese medicine, or band 3 for programs in sciences, engineering and medicine.

(2) Programs in English:

XMU offers one undergraduate program, 17 master’s program and 40 plus doctoral programmes in English. More information is available at http://admissions.xmu.edu.cn/16884/list.htm.

If the number of students admitted to any English-medium master’s program or English-medium doctoral program of Management Science and Engineering is less than five, the University will advise applicants to change their program choice.

★ English proficiency requirements

Applicants should present a TOEFL certificate with a score of 80 or above, or an IELTS certificate with a score of 6.0 or above, or other certificate of English proficiency from an accredited test. Native English speakers and applicants who have taken courses in English during their previous degree studies are exempt from this requirement, but they must produce a proof of language of instruction used in their previous studies.

5. Acceptance

Application documents will be forwarded to the relevant college or school for academic review. Admission decisions will be made on the basis of the applicants’ academic performance, language proficiency, overall merits, research output and their prospective advisor’s comments and their program preference.

The University will notify applicants of the admission outcome via email around two weeks after receiving a complete set of documents. Successful applicants will receive a pre-admission letter by email.
