1. Eligibility

(1). Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health and with a valid passport.

(2). Applicants should hold a master's degree.

3. Application procedures

(1). Online application

Applicants should first make online application at

http://admissions.xmu.edu.cn/application .

Online application is compulsory for successful application. The office will not deal with the application materials if applicants don't finish the online application.

(2). Submission of application documents

Applicants should send by post the application form generated automatically after online application and other required application documents to the Admissions Office by July 1, 2012. The office will not deal with application documents which arrive after the deadline.

4. Application documents

Applicants must provide copy of the following materials completed truly and correctly :

(1). Application Form for International Students, which should be completed in Chinese or English and printed out after online application.

(2). Copy of master's degree. Applicants who are currently studying at university should provide study certificate. Certificate in languages other than Chinese or English must have notarized translation into Chinese or English attached.

Note: Applicants with study certificate should submit notarized copy of master's degree to the Admissions Office before registration time, otherwise will automatically have their enrollment qualification withdrawn.

(3). Academic transcripts during master's study. Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must have notarized translations into Chinese or English attached.

(4). Study or research plan (minimum 1,200 words) in Chinese or English.

(5). Two letters of recommendation in Chinese or English by professors or associate professors.

(6). Photocopy of Chinese (HSK) or English Proficiency Certificate or medium of instruction certificate.

(7). Photocopy of a valid passport.

(8). Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form ( click to download ) completed in Chinese or English. (Please keep the original. )

(9). Statement of Financial Support (click to download). The applicants must have sufficient funds to cover all tuition fees, accommodation and living expenses.

Note: Please submit all the required materials. The office will not deal with an incomplete set of application documents. Application documents above will not return to applicants whether they are admitted or not.

5. Academic programmes

(1). Chinese-medium doctoral programmes

Most doctoral programmes at XMU are taught in Chinese. Detailed information about the academic programmes is available at http://admissions.xmu.edu.cn.

Chinese proficiency requirement

Applicants for humanities, economics, management, law and arts need to have Chinese proficiency of new HSK level 5(or HSK level 6) or above; Applicants for sciences should have new HSK level 4 (or HSK level 3) or above. Students whose courses are mainly taught in Chinese during master's study are exempt from this requirement but a medium of instruction certificate should be attached.

(2). English-medium doctoral programmes

The university has a team of highly-qualified staff, among whom many have obtained their doctorates from overseas universities and are well competent to guide international students in English. In 2012, the University offers 65 English-medium doctoral programmes .

Note: Doctoral students should complete a minimum of 12 to 14 credits for graduation. Doctoral students taking English-medium programmes have access to English-taught optional courses for postgraduates.

English proficiency requirement:

Applicants should present a TOEFL certificate with 80 points or above, or an IELTS certificate with grade 6.0 or above, or other certificate of English proficiency from an approved test. Native English speakers and applicants whose courses during master's study are taught in English are exempt from this requirement, but a medium of instruction certificate should be attached.

6. Length of programme, duration of study and conferring of degree

· Length of doctoral programmes: 3-4 years;

· Duration of study: 3-7 years;

· Conferring of degree: Students will be conferred doctoral degree and awarded graduation certificate after they fulfill the credit requirements and complete graduation thesis in the stipulated length.

7. Acceptance

Application documents will be forwarded to relevant colleges or schools for final academic review. Admission decisions will be made on the basis of the applicants' academic performance and overall quality. Applicants who need to attend interviews or take tests will be informed in advance.

The University will send out the Admission Notice within one month after the announcement of the admission result. Applicants can log into the online application system ( http://admissions.xmu.edu.cn/application ) to find out the result and detailed information regarding the sending of the admission package.

Humanities: 24,000 RMB/year, 72,000 RMB in total

Sciences, Economics, Management, Law, Arts: 32,000RMB/ year, 96,000RMB in total.

English-medium doctoral programmes

Humanities: 32,000 RMB/year, 96,000 RMB in total;

Sciences, Economics, Management, Law, Arts: 42,000RMB/ year, 126,000RMB in total.

10. Living expenses

(1). Accommodation fee (excluding electricity and water charges)

① On-campus accommodation:

Students fromSchoolofLife Sciences,MedicalCollege,SchoolofPharmaceutical Science,SchoolofPublic Health,CollegeofOceanand Earth Science, College of the Environment and Ecology,InstituteofEnergyare accommodated on Xiang'an campus. Doctoral students live in single rooms with the accommodation fee of 2,400 RMB per capita per year.

Students of other colleges are accommodated in overseas student apartments onXiamencampus. Doctoral students live in single rooms and the monthly accommodation fee is 1,500 RMB per person. The apartments are set in picturesque surroundings and enjoy sea views and fresh sea air. Every room is fully-equipped with modern facilities, including separate bathroom, telephone, air conditioner, Internet access point, water heater and safe.

② . Off-campus accommodation: Students can choose to rent off-campus apartments and the monthly rental fee is around 1,500 RMB per room.

11. Scholarships

(1) Chinese Government Scholarship

Applicants shall apply to Chinese diplomatic missions or dispatching authorities between January and April every year. Applicants may refer to the above authorities for application deadlines.

(2) University Postgraduate Study Programme

University Postgraduate Study Programme is enrolled directly by some ofChina's key universities.XiamenUniversityrecruits international students from all over the world under this scholarship. There are 45 openings for this scholarship, including 41 for those who have obtained their last degree outsideChinaand 4 for those who have obtained their last degree inChina.

(3) Sino-American Cultural Exchange Scholarship

This program was launched by the Ministry of Education in 2011 and plans to finance American students for degrees studies. The scholarship provides full funds for master's or doctoral candidates fromAmericaadmitted by the Chinese universities under the program.

(4)XiamenUniversityScholarship for New International Students

The University offers scholarships for excellent degree-study applicants The recipients will have their tuition fees covered, up to a maximum of 3 years for a doctoral candidate, 2 -3 years for a Master's degree candidate and 4-5 years for a Bachelor's degree candidate. Meanwhile, the University is going to provide living allowances for excellent postgraduate candidates. The recipients' academic performance will be assessed each year and only those achieving the required standard will have their scholarship renewed for the following year.
