Application Guide to International Exchange Program

I. Eligibility

1. Applicants must be current degree students from partner institutions of Xiamen University;

2. Applicants between the age of 18 and 50 (as of September 1, in entry year), in good health, and with a valid regular passport.

Note: For foreign citizens of Chinese origin (including former Chinese citizens who have obtained foreign citizenships, as well as the non-Chinese descendants of present or former Chinese citizens), only after being officially recognized by the Division of Exit and Entry Administration of Public Security Bureau as foreign citizens, can they apply for Residence Permit in China and register their academic records as international students. Please refer to the Instructions for Citizenship Certification (https://admissions.xmu.edu.cn/cn/16975/list.htm) for more information. Those without the certification will have their qualification for enrolment revoked.

 

II. Application and Admissions Process

1. Applicants that meet the eligibility criteria should submit an application to the exchange coordinator at their home institution.

2. After being officially nominated by their home institution, applicants should submit online application via XMU's portal (http://application.xmu.edu.cn; please click Exchange Program) and submit the paper-based application documents to the exchange coordinator at their home institution.

3. Exchange coordinators from the partner institution should send the nomination list to XMU's Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, and assist the nominees to complete the online application before the deadline.

4. The exchange coordinators from the partner institution shall send all application documents to XMU's Office of International Cooperation and Exchange before the deadline.

5. Application documents will be reviewed by XMU's Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, Admissions Office and the relevant college or school. Admission decisions will be made on the basis of the applicants' academic performance, language proficiency and their program preference.

6. Admission Notice and other materials related to enrolment will be sent to the exchange office of partner institution by XMU's Admissions Office.

Note: Online application is mandatory. Paper-based applications without online signing-up will not be considered.In general, applicants are not allowed to change their major after admission.

 

III. Application Documents

Applicants must provide true and correct information in all application documents:

1. Application Form for Exchange Students (automatically generated by the online application system; filled out in Chinese or English; requiring applicants’ digital signatures);

2. Enrolment Certificate (issued by the home institution with official stamp);

3. Current academic transcripts (issued by the home institution with official stamp);

4. Study Plan (at least 800 words; written in Chinese or English);

5. One Recommendation Letter (written in Chinese or English with the referrer’s autograph or the official stamp of the home institutions);

6. Language Proficiency Certificate;

(1) Not required for Chinese Language Program offered by the XMU's Overseas Education College.

(2) For Chinese-taught programs, applicants should submit valid HSK certificate. For applicants for programs of Humanities, Economics, Management, Law, Arts and Traditional Chinese Medicine, HSK band 5 with a score of 210 or higher is required. For programs in Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, HSK band 4 with a score of 210 or above is required.

(3) For English-taught programs, the valid TOEFL-iBT ( 80 points or above/ higher) or IELTS Academic (6.0 points or above/ higher) is required.

7. Front page of the passport (personal passport only; validity of the passport should at least cover the period of exchange).

8. Foreigner Physical Examination Form (https://admissions.xmu.edu.cn/16899/list.htm) completed in Chinese or English, bearing the stamp of the hospital. Physical examination results are valid for 6 months.

9. Financial Support Guarantee Statement (https://admissions.xmu.edu.cn/16900/list.htm) and its supporting documents completed in Chinese or English, certifying that the applicant has sufficient funds to cover his or her tuition, accommodation, living expenses and international travels during his or her study in China. Only applicant himself/herself or his/her family can act as a financial sponsor. The Statement should be accompanied by a copy of the financial sponsor’s valid passport or identification certificate.

 

Note:

(1) Forms, documents or certificates in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached to notarized translation in Chinese or English. We recommend notarization of the materials above and related translated versions at the Chinese Embassy in the applicant’s home country. Please stamp on the edges of all sheets with part of the impression on each sheet if the document consists of more than one page.

(2) Applicants will be held responsible for the authenticity of their documents. Incomplete or forged application materials will be rejected.

(3) Applicants are expected to keep their phones on and check their email and online application account regularly as XMU's Admissions Office will contact them when necessary.

 

IV. Application Period

For spring semester entry: September 26 to October 25;

For autumn semester entry: February 15 to March 31;

Note: Late applications will not be considered.

 

V. Programs and Location of Campuses

Programs: Exchange students can sign up for the Chinese Language Program offered by the XMU's Overseas Education College or programs offered by other schools/colleges in correspondence with their majors, credit requirements and language proficiency. For details, please visit:

Location of campuses:

There are 29 schools and colleges in XMU and the following schools/colleges/institutes are located on Xiang’an Campus: Overseas Education College, School of Medicine, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Public Health, School of Aerospace Engineering, School of Life Sciences, College of Oceanography and Earth Sciences, Coastal and Ocean Management Institute, College of Environment and Ecology, and College of Energy. Undergraduate (Grade 1& 2) and postgraduate students (Grade 1) of the College of Electronic Science and Technology, undergraduate students (Grade 1& 2) of the School of Information also reside on Xiang’an Campus, which is situated in Xiang’an District and about a 40-minute drive from Siming Campus.

 

VI. Fees

1. Tuition fee: subject to bilateral MoUs.

2. On-campus accommodation fee: subject to bilateral MoUs.

Students who live on campus are also required to pay the security deposit, water and electricity fees in accordance with the University's regulations. Please refer to the latest notice for the charging methods and standards.

3. Meals: Around RMB 800-1,200/month.

4. Insurance: Exchange students should purchase medical insurance to cover their period of exchange before landing.

Other expenses for study in China, such as international travel expenses, cost of physical examination and course materials, should be borne by the exchange students themselves.
