2022-2023 China Studies Program (CSP) Ph.D. Fellowships

The "China Studies Program" (CSP) Ph.D. Fellowships were established by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation, which united with China's top universities and outstanding scholars, and is committed to providing opportunities and support to overseas young scholars and doctoral programs for studying in China. The program includes the Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship and the Ph.D. in China Fellowship. Xiamen University is one of the 18 Chinese host universities.

Xiamen University (XMU), founded in 1921 by renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee, is a comprehensive institution of higher education directly affiliated with China’s Ministry of Education. In 2017, XMU was included in the list of Type A universities designated by the Chinese Government to achieve world-class standing. The University was placed among the world’s top 400 institutions in various authoritative world university rankings, such as THE, QS, US News and ARWU.

Currently, the University has a total enrollment of approximately 40,000 students, including 20,651 in bachelor’s degree programs, 16,712 in master’s degree programs and 4,737 in doctoral degree programs, with 1,208 international students in degree programs. Students enjoy a world-class intellectual environment on a campus nestled snugly between the hills and the sea and known for its top-notch faculty and first-class facilities. They form a vibrant and essential part of the XMU community.

Over the years, XMU has forged partnerships with more than 250 higher-learning institutions in the U.K., the U.S., Japan, France, Russia and engaged in substantive cooperation with 50 of the world’s top 200 universities. Moreover, the University operates 14 Confucius Institutes in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. In February 2016, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) welcomed its first cohort of students. As one of the nation’s leading institutions of higher education, XMU is committed to developing the intellectual and personal strengths of its students.

I. Content

The majority of financial support is provided through support for specific research and other projects in designated academic areas of Humanities and Social Sciences. For detailed information of research topics and supervisors, please login the CSP application system (http://ccsp.chinese.cn).

The Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship: Sponsors outstanding doctoral students enrolled in foreign universities to come to China for study, joint research and doctoral dissertation writing; generally, it is for one semester to two academic years.

The Ph.D. in China Fellowship: Sponsors outstanding foreign master graduates to study for doctoral degrees in Chinese universities; according to the requirements of the university's educational system, it is generally to be completed within four years.

II .Scholarships

1. Tuition and living stipend ;

2. Research fund;

3. Round-trip international airfare (Economy class);

4. Expenses for medical insurances in China;

5. Group activities and cultural experience.

6. The joint reaserch ph.D. program also includes  international roun-trip travel to China by foreign supervisor (Economy class).

7. After graduation, you will have priority for gaining support from other projects within the "China Studies Program", such as the publication of doctoral dissertations or translations, further study in China, and opportunities to participate in international academic conferences.

III. Eligibility

1. The applicant should be a citizen of non-Chinese nationality in good health.

2. Those who aspire to engage in China-related research in humanities and social sciences and have solid academic foundations, a targeted research topic or goal, and the ability to conduct research in Chinese. Preference will be given, other qualifications being equal, to candidates with high levels of Chinese proficiency. Specifically as follows:

(1) The Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship: Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì (HSK) Level 4 with 210 scores or above; PhD students that have formally registered with foreign certified universities.

(2) The Ph.D. in China Fellowship: Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì (HSK) Level 5 with 210 scores or above; Graduates with a master's degree or current master's degree candidates

Note: Applicants for English-medium programs should also meet the Chinese proficiency requirements above besides the English proficiency requirements of XMU English-medium programs.

3. Applicants who are currently participating in other Scholarship are not eligible to apply for this Plan.

IV. Application Time & Procedures

1. Applicants are required to log into the CSP Application System (https://csp.chinese.cn/) and complete the online application, choosing Xiamen University as the host university before February 28, 2022.

2. Between January 1 and March 31, 2022, applicants should also submit the online application on the International Student Application System of Xiamen University (http://application.xmu.edu.cn):

(1) Application category for the Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship:  "exchange student - senior scholar".

(2) Application category for the Ph.D. in China Fellowship: "doctoral degree programs".


1. Applicants should finish online application on both systems above. Late applications will not be accepted.

2. Applicants don't have to mail any hard copies of application materials to us.

3. Applicants with a recommendation letter from Confucius Institutes will be given priority over competitors of similar qualifications. Xiamen University currently hosts 14 Confucius Institutes around the world (https://oec.xmu.edu.cn/yhzx/yhkzxy.htm). Applicants can also contact other Confucius Institutes in their host countries for  recommendation letters.

V. Selection and Notification

1. Candidates’ qualifications will be assessed by Xiamen University.

2. Candidates, who pass Xiamen University's assessment,  will have assessment and video interview conducted by expert committee of center for language education and cooperation.

3. The final results will be published.
