Delegation Headed by Leaders of General Alumni Association(XMU) Visits Indonesia, Thailand

From September 19th to 26th, Zhan Xinli, the former Vice President and Vice Chairwoman of the General Alumni Association of XMU, led a group of five principals from the Southern Base of Confucius Institute Headquarters/Office of Confucius Institute Affairs, the General Alumni Association Secretariat and Admission Office of Xiamen University to visit Indonesia and Thailand. Over there, they not only held the local Chinese teacher training briefing session, and conducted international student recruitment promotion, but also attended the 20th anniversary celebration of both the Thailand Alumni Association of Xiamen University and Mae Fah Luang University in Thailand, and visited alumni in Indonesia and Thailand.

 

On the morning of the 20th, the delegation first visited the Jakarta Chinese Education Coordination Agency (Badan Koordinasi Pendidikan Bahasa Mandarin) in Indonesia, accompanied by the Indonesian Alumni Association of XMU. Mr. Cai Changjie, Executive Chairman of the Jakarta Chinese Education Coordination Agency, warmly welcomed the delegation with the other principals. The two sides conducted deep discussions on the current status and prospects of Chinese language and culture education, international student enrollment promotion, local Chinese teacher training, Chinese language test and teaching construction. They also reached a consensus on strengthening cooperation in the future.

 

In the afternoon, Zhan Xinli led the delegation to visit the Former President of the Indonesian Alumni Association of XMU and famous Indonesian Chinese educator Ms. Qiu Ruilin. Ms. Qiu Ruilin is now 87 years old and had been teaching for more than 60 years. She has made great contributions to the Chinese education in Indonesia. In 2008, she was awarded the “Lifetime Achievement Award for Chinese Language Teaching” by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the China Overseas Exchange Association.

 

In the evening, the Indonesian Alumni Association of XMU organized a solemn and enthusiastic alumni sodality, welcoming the delegation led by Zhang Rong, President of XMU and the visiting delegation led by Zhan Xinli, Vice President of XMU. At the welcome meeting, President Zhang Rong delivered a warm speech, introducing the special relationship between Xiamen University and Southeast Asia, the construction of Malaysia campus of Xiamen University, and sharing his understanding and gratitude of the work of alumni and the joy that XMU has being elected into Double First-Class Universities. He also mentioned that Xiamen University is about to celebrate its 100th anniversary. It is hoped that Indonesian alumni will pay more attention and contribute more to the development of XMU. Under the witness of President Zhang Rong and Vice Chairwoman Zhan Xinli, the new Council and Supervisory Board of the Indonesian Alumni Association was established. Wang Ruifang, President of Xiamen University Malaysia Branch, Xiahou Jianbing, Director of Student Affairs Office, Li Yongqiang, Director of Office of Development and Planning, Yu Hongbo, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, and Geng Hu, Deputy Director of the Southern Base of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Office of Confucius Institute Affairs etc. attended the dinner as well. Liu Jinyuan, President of Indonesian Alumni Association of XMU, Tian Shuyun, Vice President of Indonesian Alumni Association of XMU, Rao Shunzhao, Qiu Yuanting and other 80 alumni also participated in the activities.

 

On the 21st, the delegation visited the Confucius Institute at University of Al Azhar, Indonesia, accompanied by the Indonesian Alumni Association of XMU. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Xiao Xiangzhong, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at University of Al Azhar, and the teachers and students of the Confucius Institute. Later, the Director Xiao Xiangzhong introduced the construction and development of the Confucius Institute; Vice Chairwoman Zhan Xinli introduced the schooling status of Xiamen University's overseas education and the work of the Indonesian Alumni Association of XMU. The two sides conducted actively discuss on the areas such as admissions promotion, teacher training, and school-running mode etc., and looked forward to more cooperation in the future.

 

On the 22nd, the “Overseas Students Enrollment Briefing and Foreign Local Teacher Training Program Session” was held in Jakarta, Indonesia. The session was hosted by the Indonesian Alumni Association of XMU and the Jakarta Chinese Education Coordination Agency, and co-organized by the Indonesian Sun City Brand Ball Room. The seminar attracted about 200 participants, including Indonesian predecessors and teachers in Chinese education, alumni of Xiamen University, alumni of Indonesian Sun City Brand Ball Room and young students. Ms. Zhan Xinli gave a warm speech to the guests. She introduced the school history, academic advantages, international cooperation and exchanges, and the construction of the Malaysian campus of XMU, and also encouraged Indonesian students and local Chinese teachers to study at Xiamen University. Principals from Admission Office of XMU and the Southern Base of Confucius Institute Headquarters introduced the application procedures for studying at Xiamen University, the opening of courses taught in English, various scholarships for study abroad, and applications for local Chinese language teacher training programs.

 

On the 23rd, the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Thai Alumni Association of XMU And the Handover Ceremony of the 10th and 11th Councils were held in Bangkok, Thailand. Two hundred people including Chen Wuqing was re-elected as the chairman of the Thai Alumni Association of Xiamen University. Chen Hantao, Lu Aishan, Zhang Yongqing, Zhang Xiangyu, who were the past presidents of the Thai Alumni Association, Luo Tieying, President of Thai Alumni Association of China’s Universities, and other Thai alumni of XMU participated this event. Entrusted by Zhang Yan, Secretary of the CPC XMU Committee, Zhang Rong, President of XMU and Zhu Chongshi, Chairman of the General Alumni Association of XMU, Ms. Zhan Xinli congratulated the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Thai Alumni Association and expressed her sincere gratitude to the Thai alumni for their great contribution to Xiamen University. She especially mentioned and thanked the first president, Cai Yueshi, the one who donated Jianwen Building and Songen Building, making significant contributions to the improvement of school conditions for Xiamen University, and laying a solid foundation for the establishment and development of the Thai Alumni Association of XMU. In addition, she also introduced the latest development of XMU, and hoped that the alumni would continue to care for and support the development of XMU. Afterwards, the accompanying students of the Art College of Xiamen University, Chorus of the Thai Alumni , and Chorus and Youth Chorus of Thai Alumni Association of China’s Universities jointly performed the show for the celebration.

 

On the 24th, the delegation of Xiamen University and teachers and students of the Confucius Institute and Chinese college of Mae Fah Luang University met at the Confucius Institute of Mae Fah Luang University. Dr. Kang Liyan, Deputy director of the Chinese College of Mae Fah Luang University, Huang Jianjun, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute of Mae Fah Luang University, and more than 50 teachers and students participated in the meet. After listening to the recent work report of the Confucius Institute of Mae Fah Luang University and the brief introduction of the Chinese College, the delegation conducted in-depth discussion on teacher training, enrollment, local teacher projects, and alumni exchanges.

 

On the morning of the 25th, the delegation was invited to attend the 20th anniversary of Mae Fah Luang University, Thailand. Ambassadors and consulates’ representatives from China, India, Bhutan, Malaysia, Japan, Myanmar, South Korea, the United States, France, and other countries attended the celebration. On the celebration, Ms. Zhan Xinli read the congratulatory letter from Zhang Rong, President of XMU, expressed warm congratulations on behalf of Xiamen University to the 20th anniversary of Mae Fah Luang University, Thailand, and presented a gift to Dr. Wan Cai, President of Mae Fah Luang University, Thailand.

 

On the afternoon of the 25th, “Thai-Sino Cultural Performance to Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Mae Fah Luang University” was held in the Princess Srinagarindra Auditorium of Mae Fah Luang University. In the opening speech, Dr. Wan Cai, President of Mae Fah Luang University, said that the development of the Mae Fah Luang University is inseparable from the joint efforts of everyone. He also thanked Xiamen University for its strong support in the cooperation and exchanges between the two sides. Ms. Zhan Xinli, Vice President of XMU expressed her heartfelt congratulations on the achievements and glory of Mae Fah Luang University. She hoped that the friendship between the two universities will last forever and build a bridge between Chinese and Thai culture and academic cooperation. More than 1,300 teachers and students from the Mae Fah Luang University and local primary and secondary schools gathered together, singing and dancing. The performance units include: Thai Alumni Association of Xiamen University, Student Art Troupe of Xiamen University, the Confucius Institute at Mae Fah Luang University, Thailand, and Chinese College of Mae Fah Luang University.
