Application Guide for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2021, Xiamen University
For the purpose of satisfying the growing demand of the international community for Chinese language teachers and facilitating Chinese language education in other countries, the Center for Language Education And Cooperation (CLEC) will continue with the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms, certain HSK test centers, Chinese language (education) departments of foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language instruction of other countries, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (collectively “recommending institutions”) may recommend outstanding students and currently-employed Chinese language teachers to study International Chinese Language Education or related majors in Chinese universities and colleges (“host institutions”).
Xiamen University (XMU), established in 1921 by renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee, has been chosen into the Chinese Government’s Program of Building World-Class Universities and World-Class Disciplines. I. ELIGIBILITY
a) non-Chinese citizens;
b) in good physical and mental conditions, and with good academic performance and conduct;
c) committed to the Chinese language education and related work;
d) between the ages of 16 and 35 (as of September 1st, 2021). Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall not be over 45-years-old.
II. SCHOLARSHIP TYPES AND QUALIFICATIONS
A. Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)
This program commences in September 2021 for a period of 2 academic years. Applicants shall hold a Bachelor’s degree, and provide valid HSK(Level 5) score report with points of 210, and valid HSKK(Intermediate Level) score report with points of 60. Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work aggrement or relevant certificates for the proposed teaching institution after graduation .
B. Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study
This program commences in September 2021 for a period of 11 months. Students in China are not eligible.
i. TCSOL: Applicants shall provide valid HSK(Level 3) score report with points of 270, and valid HSKK score report.
ii. Chinese Language Study: Applicants shall provide valid HSK(Level 3) score report with points of 210. Priority will be given to applicants who provide valid HSKK score report.
C. Scholarship for One-Semester Study
This program commences in September 2021 and March 2022 for a period of 5 months. Applicants with X1 or X2 visa on their passports are not eligible.
i. TCSOL: Applicants shall provide valid HSK(Level 3) score report with points of 180, and valid HSKK score report .
D. Scholarship for Four-Week Study
This program commences in July and December 2021 for a period 4 weeks . Applicants with X1 or X2 visa on their passports are not eligible.
This program includes Chinese studies, Chinese medicine and Taiji culture, Chinese language plus Chinese family experience,etc. Applicants shall provide valid HSK score report. Could be ogranizThe program may be organized and applied for by a Confucius Institute with 15 participants per group. Prior to the trip, a detailed study plan shall be made in consultation with Xiamen University and such plan shall be submitted to CLEC for approval.
III. International Chinese Language Teachers (Confucius Institute) Scholarship Coverage and Criteria
The scholarship provides full coverage on tuition, accommodation, living expenses (four-week study students are excluded) and comprehensive medical insurance .
a) Tuition fees are co-ordinated by Xiamen University for the traning and management of scholarship students, cultural activites, organization of Chinese language examination. Tuition does not include teaching materials and tickets of tourist attractions.
b) Accommodation fee is under the overall planning and utilization of Xiamen University to provide students with in-campus apartments (double rooms). Students may also live off-campus upon application and getting permission from the Xiamen University. Students who live off-campus are entitled to accommodation allowance of 700 CNY per person/month for master and language students paid on a monthly / quarterly basis from the Xiamen University.
c) Living allowance is granted by Xiamen University on a monthly basis. The monthly allowance for one-academic-year study students and one-semester students is 2,500 CNY per person. For MTCSOL student, the monthly allowance is 3,000 CNY per person. Students are required to complete enrollment procedures for every semester within stipulated period; otherwise, their scholarship may be cancelled. Students who are enrolled before the 15th (or on the 15th) of the month are entitled to the full allowance of that month while those enrolled after the 15th of that month are only entitled to half of the amount.
During the study period, for any student who is absent from China due to personal reasons for more than 15 days (excluding winter and summer holidays), the allowance during absence will be suspended.
For students who suspend study or drop out of university for personal reasons, or who are given disciplinary punishment by the Xiamen University, allowance will be terminated on the date of such suspension, dropping out or when the decision of such punishment is announced.
The living allowance for the month of graduation will be granted half a month after the date of graduation or expiration day of the study confirmed by Xiamen University.
d) Comprehensive medical insurance is purchased by the Xiamen University in accordance with relevant regulations of studying in China stipulated by the Ministry of Education of China. Insurance fee per person is 160 CNY for four-week study students, 400 CNY for one-semester students, and 800 CNY per year for students engaged in program longer than one academic year.
IV. APPLICATION PROCEDURES
1. Online registration will be available from March 1, 2021 on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website (cis.chinese.cn). Please log on to search for recommending institutions and Xiamen University; upload application materials online; and track the application progress, comments and result.
The application deadlines (Beijing Time) are:
a) For programs commencing in July, student application must complete before April 15th; recommending institutions and Xiamen University must complete review before April 25th;
b) For programs commencing in September, student application must complete before May 15th; recommending institutions and Xiamen University must complete review before May 25th;
c) For programs commencing in December, student application must complete before September 15th; recommending institutions and Xiamen University must complete review before September 25th;
d) For programs commencing in March 2022, student application must complete before November 15th; recommending institutions and Xiamen University must complete review before November 25th.
2. Applicants should also submit another application on international student application system of Xiamen University (http://application.xmu.edu.cn), choosing "exchange student-general scholar-Overseas Education College" as the student category.
3. CLEC will entrust an expert panel to review the applications. Decisions will be made based on HSK and HSKK scores and levels, and in consideration of country distribution as well as other factors. The results will be published about three months before university starts.
Notes: Applicants are expected to keep their phones on and check their email and online application account regularly as XMU Admissions Office will contact them when necessary. Scholarship holders need to confirm with the Xiamen University to go through the procedures of studying in China, print out the scholarship certificate online, and register at Xiamen University on the designated date as per the letter of admission.
V. Application Documents for International Chinese Language Teachers (Confucius Institute) Scholarship
A. For all applicants:
a) a scanned copy of passport photo page;
b) a scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within the two-year validity);
c) a reference letter by the head of the recommending institutions.
d) a certification of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation) and an official transcript;
Note: Applicants who have provided a proof of expected graduation should submit a notarized copy of their highest degree to the XMU Admissions Office before the specified registration date (mid-September 2021); failure to do so will result in disqualification of both enrollment and scholarships.
e) Foreigner Physical Examination Form completed in Chinese or English, bearing the stamp of the hospital. Physical examination results are valid for 6 months.
f) Financial Support Guarantee Statement and its supporting documents completed in Chinese or English, certifying that the applicant has sufficient funds to cover his or her tuition, accommodation, living expenses and international travels during his or her study in China. Only applicant himself/herself or his/her family can act as a financial sponsor. The Statement should be accompanied by a copy of the financial sponsor’s valid passport or identification certificate. Applicants for scholarships are not exempt from this requirement.
g) Non-criminal record report. The applicant shall submit a valid certificate of Non-Criminal Record issuedby the local public security authority, usually issued within 6 months prior to the submission date of the application.
B. applicants of the Scholarship for MTCSOL students are required to provide 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors. Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.
C. Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall provide proof of employment as well as a reference letter by the employer.
D. Applicants under the age of 18 shall provide certified documents of designation signed by their entrusted legal guardians in China.
E. Applicants shall also provide additional documents required by the Xiamen University.
VI. CHINESE BRIDGE AWARD RECIPIENT POLICIES
Chinese Bridge winners who have been awarded the 2021 Confucius Institute Scholarship Certificate shall log onto the International Chinese Language Teachers (Confucius Institute) Scholarship website and submit documents to Xiamen University upon presentation of their scholarship certificates. b) Applicants shall be familiar with the specific criteria and deadlines for registration, and submit necessary documents according to specific requirements.
c) Degree students are subject to the annual assessment according to the Annual Appraisal Procedures of Confucius Institute Scholarship.
d) Those who fail to register on time, fail to pass the health assessment, drop out midway and/or suspended from university will be deprived of their scholarship.
